Azalea Care Guide: How to Keep Your Plant Blooming

Indoor Azalea Care: Keep It Blooming for Weeks

Azalea (Rhododendron simsii) is one of the most spectacular flowering houseplants available. When in bloom, the entire plant is covered with vibrant flowers — white, pink, red, purple, or bicoloured. But azaleas have a reputation for being finicky. Learn a few key rules and yours will bloom beautifully for 4-6 weeks and return year after year.

Azalea Varieties

Rhododendron simsii (Indian Azalea) — the most common type sold as a houseplant. Blooms November through March. Large flowers in a wide range of colours.

Japanese Azalea (R. japonicum) — blooms in spring; leaves turn red and drop in autumn (deciduous). More tolerant of different conditions.

Popular Cultivars:

  • Hellmut Vogel — deep red semi-double flowers
  • Inga — white with soft pink edges
  • Knut Erwen — vivid pink double flowers
  • Elspeth — salmon-pink
  • Germania — purple-red, long-blooming

Temperature: The #1 Secret

Azalea is a cool-climate plant. This is the main reason flowers drop in warm rooms.

Optimal temperatures:

  • In bloom: 12-16°C — at this temperature flowering lasts 4-6 weeks
  • Summer (growth period): 18-22°C
  • Pre-bloom in autumn/winter: 6-10°C for 8-10 weeks — essential for bud formation

In Tashkent, the best spot for a blooming azalea is a cool glazed balcony, an insulated but unheated porch, or the coolest spot on a windowsill away from radiators.

If your azalea is near a hot radiator, flowers will drop within 1-2 weeks. Keep it away from heat sources.

Watering: Soft and Slightly Acidic Water

Azaleas are demanding in two ways:

Consistency: keep the substrate consistently moist but never waterlogged. Don't let it dry out — azaleas react quickly (leaves wilt, flowers drop). In summer you may need to water daily or every other day.

Water quality: azaleas need soft, slightly acidic water (pH 4-5.5). Hard tap water is a common problem. Use:

  • Filtered water
  • Boiled and cooled water
  • Rainwater
  • Or add a few drops of lemon juice per litre of water

Monthly, water with a very dilute citric acid solution (1g per 1 litre) to maintain soil acidity.

Misting: azaleas love humidity. Mist leaves (not flowers!) daily or every other day, especially when central heating is running.

Light

  • Bright indirect light; no direct sun
  • East or west-facing window — ideal
  • Good light in winter when blooming (supplement with grow light if needed)
  • Can be placed on a shaded balcony in summer — fresh air is beneficial

Soil and Potting

Azalea requires acidic soil — regular potting mix won't work. Use:

  • Special "Rhododendron and Azalea" potting mix
  • Or mix: peat moss (60%) + pine bark/forest soil (20%) + perlite (20%)

Choose a shallow pot (azaleas have shallow root systems). Always use a pot with drainage holes.

Care After Flowering

When flowering ends — the critical moment:

  1. Remove spent flowers along with the short stem below them
  2. Repot into fresh acidic mix if it's been more than 2 years
  3. From May to August, move outdoors to a shaded spot — summer outside helps azalea build new growth
  4. Water regularly and fertilize every 2 weeks (azalea/rhododendron fertilizer)
  5. Pinch new shoot tips to encourage bushier growth and more flower buds
  6. From September/October, move to a cool location (6-10°C) for 8-10 weeks — this triggers bud formation for next season

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do azalea flowers drop right after I bring it home? Almost always because the room is too warm. Azaleas bloom best at 12-16°C. Place it in the coolest spot in your home — on a cool windowsill away from any heat source (but no cold draughts).

How long does azalea bloom? At proper cool temperatures (12-16°C) — 4-6 weeks. In a warm room (22°C+) — 1-2 weeks.

Can I save an azalea after all the flowers and some leaves have dropped? Yes, if the roots are alive. Cut back dead parts, repot in fresh acidic mix, provide moderate watering with soft water, keep cool. Move outdoors to shade in summer for recovery.

Is azalea toxic? Yes — all parts of the plant are toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. Keep away from pets and small children.

When does azalea bloom? Early varieties: November-December. Mid-season: January-February. Late varieties: March-April. Most shop azaleas are winter-blooming.
