Bonsai: Types, Care, and Where to Buy in Tashkent
Bonsai: A Miniature Tree in Your Home
Bonsai is the art of growing miniature trees, with a history spanning over 1,000 years. A small tree in a shallow pot — a living work of art that grows and changes over years.
Bonsai is gaining popularity in Tashkent: it's a stylish gift, interior decoration, and meditative hobby.
Best Bonsai Types for Beginners
Ficus (Ficus retusa) — the most forgiving bonsai. Tolerant of beginner mistakes, recovers quickly after pruning. Glossy leaves, dramatic aerial roots. Ideal for indoor conditions in Tashkent.
Carmona — the "tea tree." Small shiny leaves, white flowers. Loves warmth — Tashkent's climate works well.
Crassula (Jade tree) — the "money tree" in bonsai form. Thick trunk, fleshy leaves. Forgives watering lapses.
Juniper — the classic bonsai look. Evergreen conifer. Needs fresh air — take it to the balcony in summer.
Basic Care
Light. Most bonsai need bright indirect light. South or east-facing window.
Watering. Main rule: water when the top 1-2 cm of soil is dry. Water thoroughly until it flows from drainage holes. Don't leave standing water in the saucer.
Humidity. Bonsai prefer 50-70% humidity. Tashkent's winter air is dry from heating. Place the pot on a tray of wet pebbles, mist the canopy.
Pruning. Maintains shape and miniature size. Monthly, trim new shoots to 2-3 leaves. Once a year (spring), structural pruning for the overall silhouette.
