Ficus Care Guide: Growing at Home in Tashkent
Ficus — The Perfect Houseplant
Ficus is one of the most popular houseplants in Tashkent. Low-maintenance, beautiful, and air-purifying. But even a simple ficus has its care secrets.
Popular Ficus Varieties
Ficus Benjamina — the classic. Small glossy leaves, elegant canopy. Comes in variegated and solid green. Loves stability — don't move the pot unnecessarily.
Ficus Elastica (rubber plant) — large dark green leaves. Very hardy, ideal for beginners. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth weekly.
Ficus Lyrata (fiddle leaf) — large lyre-shaped leaves. Trendy minimalist interior plant. More demanding — dislikes drafts.
Watering
The main mistake is overwatering. Ficus prefers being slightly dry over being waterlogged. Simple rule: stick your finger 2-3 cm into the soil. Dry? Water it. Moist? Wait.
In Tashkent's summer, water twice a week. Winter — once every 7-10 days. Use room-temperature, settled water.
Lighting
Bright indirect light is ideal. Direct summer sun will scorch the leaves. In winter, move closer to the window. Variegated varieties need more light or they lose their coloring.
Repotting
Young ficus — once a year in spring. Mature plants — every 2-3 years. Choose a pot 2-3 cm wider than the current one. Drainage is essential — clay pebbles at the bottom.
Common Problems
- Dropping leaves — stress from moving, drafts, or overwatering
- Yellow leaves — overwatering or insufficient light
- Dry tips — dry air. Mist regularly or use a humidifier
