How to Keep Your Bouquet Fresh: 7 Proven Tips

7 Ways to Make Your Bouquet Last Longer

Received a beautiful bouquet and want it to last as long as possible? The average bouquet lives 5-7 days, but with proper care you can extend it to 10-14 days. Here are 7 proven tips from our florists.

1. Trim Stems at a 45° Angle

Immediately after receiving the bouquet, cut each stem 2-3 cm at a 45-degree angle. This increases the water absorption area.

Important: use a sharp knife or pruning shears, not scissors — scissors crush the stem and block capillaries.

Repeat trimming every 2-3 days.

2. Remove Lower Leaves

Leaves below the water line will rot and create bacteria. Remove all leaves that would be submerged.

3. Use Clean, Cool Water

Fill the vase 2/3 with cool water. Change it daily or at least every 2 days. Clean the vase inside with each change.

Tulip tip: tulips love cold water — add an ice cube.

4. Add Flower Food

The flower food packet that comes with bouquets actually works. If you don't have one, try a homemade solution:

  • Sugar + vinegar: 1 teaspoon each per liter of water
  • Aspirin: half a tablet per liter
  • Citric acid: a pinch per liter

5. Find the Right Spot

Don't place near: direct sunlight, heaters, fruit (they release ethylene), drafts.

Ideal spot: a cool corner with indirect light. Temperature 18-22°C.

6. Remove Wilting Flowers

As soon as one flower starts wilting, remove it. Wilting flowers release ethylene that accelerates the death of others.

7. Nighttime Cool Down

At night, move the bouquet to the coolest spot in your home — balcony (if not freezing), hallway, bathroom. Cool temperatures slow the flowers' metabolism.
