Peonies in Tashkent: When Is the Season and How to Choose
Peonies — The Most Coveted Spring Flowers
Peonies are flowers with character. Lush, fragrant, incredibly beautiful. Their season is short, making them all the more anticipated.
When Is Peony Season in Tashkent
Uzbek peonies appear in April and end in early June. Peak season is May. Dutch peonies are available March through July but cost more.
If you want peonies for a wedding or birthday — plan your date around the season. A bouquet of in-season peonies costs 2-3 times less than off-season ones.
Types of Peonies
Herbaceous — classic garden peonies. Large, lush, very fragrant. Pink, white, burgundy.
Tree peonies — shrub peonies with woody stems. Larger flowers than herbaceous, but less fragrant.
Itoh hybrids — a cross between herbaceous and tree peonies. Unusual colors: yellow, coral, bicolor.
How to Choose Fresh Peonies
- The bud should be "marshmallow-like": soft but not fully open. A bud that's too tight may never open
- Fragrance — fresh peonies smell wonderful. No scent means they've been refrigerated too long
- Stem — firm and green, no slime
- Leaves — fresh, without yellowing
How to Make Peonies Last
- Trim stems at an angle
- Remove leaves that would sit in water
- Peonies love cool spots — keep away from sun
- Change water daily
- Fully opened? Enjoy — that's peak beauty
