ZZ Plant Care Guide: Why It's the Best Houseplant for Your Home
ZZ Plant: Why It's Called the Perfect Houseplant
The ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is one of the most popular houseplants worldwide. Its thick stems and fleshy leaves store water, while tuberous roots hold nutrient reserves. That's what makes it so low-maintenance.
Native to tropical Africa, the plant adapted to drought conditions — making it perfect for forgetful plant owners.
Conditions in Tashkent
Tashkent's climate suits the ZZ plant perfectly. Hot dry summer? No problem. Heating season with dry air? Also fine.
Light. Indirect light is ideal. Tolerates shade but grows slower. Direct sun may burn leaves — filter with a sheer curtain on south windows.
Temperature. 18-26°C. Minimum 12°C. Don't place on cold windowsills in winter.
Humidity. Not demanding. 40-60% is normal. No misting needed.
Watering — The Golden Rule
The #1 cause of ZZ plant death is overwatering. The tuber rots from excess moisture.
Summer: every 10-14 days. Wait until soil is completely dry.
Winter: every 3-4 weeks. The plant is dormant and barely uses water.
How to check: stick a wooden stick into the soil. If 3-4 cm deep is dry — time to water.
Important: drain water from the saucer 30 minutes after watering.
Soil and Pot
Soil: light, loose, well-draining. Mix: universal soil + perlite + sand (2:1:1). Or ready-made succulent mix.
Pot: with drainage holes. 2-3 cm wider than the root ball.
Drainage: 3-4 cm of expanded clay at the bottom.
Repotting
Young plants — once a year in spring. Adults — every 2-3 years when roots fill the pot.
Propagation
Leaf cuttings: cut a leaf with a stem piece, dry the cut for 2 hours, plant in peat-perlite mix. Roots appear in 2-4 months.
Division: during repotting, divide a large tuber into 2-3 parts. Each must have at least one leaf and root section.
Common Problems
Yellow leaves — overwatering. Check roots, remove rotten parts.
Stretched stems — not enough light. Move closer to window.
Brown spots — sun burn. Move away from direct sun.
Soft stem at base — root rot from overwatering. Repot urgently.
